In a bid to diversify its portfolio in the everyday rewards space, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CM Quick QuoteCM ) , commonly called CIBC, is set to acquire Costco Wholesale Corporation’s (COST Quick QuoteCOST ) existing portfolio of Canadian co-brand credit card. The Canadian Costco credit card portfolio has more than $3 billion in its outstanding balances. Financial terms of the deal remained undisclosed.

Shares of CIBC gained marginally, post announcement of the acquisition, raising investor optimism on the deal.

Capital One Financial Corporation (COF Quick QuoteCOF ) , the current issuer of the Costco branded credit card in Canada, is concluding its alliance with the retail giant.
Mastercard will continue stay  the exclusive payment network of the Costco co-branded credit card in Canada and will also be accepted in the country’s Costco warehouses.


CIBC and Costco also signed a long-term agreement that makes the former the exclusive issuer of new Costco-branded Mastercards in Canada. The deal is expected to close in early 2022, subject to customary closing conditions. Thereafter, the bank will start issuing the new CIBC Costco Mastercard to the reformed portfolio and accept new applications, both online and at Costco Canada warehouses.
